“Most times I didn’t even spend my lunch money because if I spend it, no money would be there for me to come back home.” Tajay H., Grade 6 student and prefect remembers that at his old school he had to make tough choices.
At Christel House, he no longer has to choose. His scholarship includes transportation, breakfast, lunch and a healthy snack (and much more). We’re removing these barriers to education so his family can redirect funds to other needs, and he can focus on learning. “I do my work,” he says, “When it’s work time, I don’t mess around with my work.”
For Tajay, Math comes easy. “No matter how hard it is, I get it quickly... Growing up as a kid, I always like to practice on my own. I was always obsessed with Math.”
Social Studies is his least favourite subject: “I’m not really good at it, but that’s why I keep on coming to school because when I come to school and learn more about Social Studies, I began to know more about the subject.”
The Academic Booster Programme on Saturdays, funded by American Friends of Jamaica, also helped him to improve. It helped to be in smaller groups so that some of the students could be more focused and disciplined. His hard work paid off, Tajay is among the most proficient students based on the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) 5 results.
Tajay is working hard to make the most out of this opportunity at Christel House Jamaica. He even promised his mother: “I made that promise to her that I would never miss school, unless I am sick. She wants me to be really smart.” And he is well on his way -- he was Top Boy in 2023 and 2024.
Tajay enjoys track and football and is working to build his skill set in both. “My idol is Usain Bolt, the fastest man alive. I look back and watch his videos. When I practice, practice makes perfect.”
