    Mel Mental Reset

When school reopened after Hurricane Melissa, we understood that many students were returning with the emotional strain of what they had experienced at home. Even with this, more than 81% of our students were present on the first day, showing resilience and trust in school as a safe and steady environment.

While getting back into routine was important, our first priority was to create a calm and supportive start for students and staff. For our junior schoolers, the morning began with energizing movement activities to lift their spirits and help release tension. Within minutes, the atmosphere shifted as smiles returned and the space felt lighter.

Our high schoolers were welcomed with a different approach. They began the day with quiet mindfulness activities and a grounding devotion that allowed them to reflect and regain focus after the disruption and stress caused by the hurricane.

A check in session which included stress management tips and mindfulness activities also helped staff to reset.

In addition to the activities on campus, our Social Services Department reached out to students who did not report to school. These check-ins ensured that every child was accounted for and that families received support where needed.

Across the campus, the goal remained the same: to prioritize our students’ wellbeing, help them feel safe, and guide them back into learning with care and understanding.
