“What I’m most proud of is having a lot of friends and company and somebody to stand up for me.” When you Google the term people-person, you might just see Grade 3 student, Alesia G. Alesia won the Good Deportment and Most Disciplined awards last year year, and she exemplifies those qualities every day at Christel House Jamaica.
Since enrolling at Christel House, Alesia says she’s grown in confidence and now uses it to help others.
As much as she is thriving now, Alesia admits she wasn’t always this confident. “Before CHJ, I was at a little small school and it wasn’t that good. I was worried I would not make a lot of friends.” But now, she can confidently introduce herself and share with classmates, like her first friend at CHJ, Danica.
Alesia is often seen helping her classmates, actively participating in lessons, or, as she says, enjoying time with others: “I love to talk with my friends and sometimes go outside to play.” Friends are important to her, and she’s grown alongside them as they move from grade to grade.
Looking ahead, Alesia has big dreams. “I want to be an artist mainly, but if that is not working, I would be a dentist or a teacher.” she says. Her interest in dentistry comes from a childhood toothache, “The dentist fix it up.”
When asked about her favourite teacher, it was hard for her to pick just one: Miss Preddie, Mrs. Neill, Mrs. Downer, Ms. Daley, and Mrs. Drummond-Malcom top the list. And her interests go beyond academics—she says, “I really like netball and hope I can play on the team one day.”
Alesia knows school isn’t always easy. “Sometimes school is hard but sometimes it is the best place,” she shares. “Friends and teachers by my side always supporting me every day.”
Family support matters too. “I love mummy very much, sometimes she has helped me in many ways even if sometimes she can’t buy me something,” she says, adding that her mom ensures she studies even when she is at work.
And if Alesia could tell a stranger about CHJ? “It is a very nice place, and they give us free things and they give children the opportunity to learn, and the teachers and staff are very nice.”
Her mother, Zanialee says Christel House Jamaica has been a great help and has big hopes and dreams for her daughter. ”She has grown so much, she is confident, and she is happy at school. I want her to excel to the best of her ability… the sky is the limit.”
Alesia G. is a shining example of how Christel House Jamaica helps students grow—academically, socially, and confidently.
