From TA to Teacher: Ms. Bhoorasingh’s Journey

When she first walked through the doors as a teacher’s assistant (TA) almost five years ago, Ms. Renee Bhoorasingh didn’t know that before long, she would be leading her own class. Ms. Bhoorasingh has been a bright light at Christel House Jamaica since the school first opened its doors, helping to build the foundation of our learning community. She is now a full-time kindergarten teacher, earning admiration from students, colleagues, and parents alike.

Reflecting on her early days, Ms. Bhoorasingh describes her transition from TA to teacher as a rewarding and transformational experience. “Starting as a teacher’s assistant gave me hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of classroom dynamics,” she shared. “Over time, I gained confidence, developed my own teaching style, and embraced the full responsibility of leading a classroom. Credit goes to my principal, Mr. Jason Scott, for believing in my ability to lead.”

Her inspiration to teach came from a genuine love for children. “Teaching felt like the perfect way to share that love every day,” she explained.

When asked what makes Christel House Jamaica special to her, Ms. Bhoorasingh answered, “Christel House isn’t just a school; it’s a mission… The holistic approach to breaking the cycle of poverty is what makes it so special. This school offers a perfect platform for both students and staff to grow.” She also praises the professional development and training opportunities CHJ offers, calling them essential to her growth as an educator.

One of her greatest joys is watching students grow academically, especially in literacy. “I have a passion for reading. Taking a student from not knowing letter sounds to reading fluently in a short time is one of the most rewarding parts of my job,” she said. “And those morning hugs from students I no longer teach – that’s the icing on the cake.”

She also enjoys sharing her love of sports with her students.  “Many of my students would be surprised to learn how much I love sports, especially cricket.” She expressed that teaching them about cricket and seeing their excitement was truly a memorable moment.

Ms. Bhoorasingh says there are rough days as an educator, but she finds peace and clarity through quiet reflection. Whether it’s reading, listening to music, going for a walk, or spending time with her family, she knows the importance of recharging so she can give her best to her students.

Ms. Bhoorasingh’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and purpose, and the belief that it is in teaching that we learn.
