Just a few years ago, reading was a challenge for Arianna B. Today, the Grade 3 student is not only reading confidently, but is also earning recognition on the track, while maintaining a perfect attendance record.
Grade 2 teacher Simonette Daley shares, “Arianna entered Grade 2 reading at a Primer (pre-K) level. After exiting Grade 2, she was at grade level. Her mother, Yasheema, was really determined and always wanted to know how she could help.”
Once hesitant about reading, Arianna now enjoys storybooks at home and often reads to her siblings. Her progress has been so remarkable that teachers sometimes ask her to read aloud for other students.
Even though she has grown tremendously as a reader, Arianna’s favourite subject remains math. She says that in spite of its challenges, she is driven to do well because she loves it.
She also enjoys running, and qualified this year for Prep School Champs, demonstrating the same determination on the track as she brings to her schoolwork.
Arianna also knows it’s critical to show up every day, which has resulted in her being awarded for perfect attendance. “It’s important because you are learning much more, and if you don’t come to school, you will not be able to read,” she says.
Now in Grade 3, Arianna continues to make her mark.
“Whatever area you place her in, she excels,” says her Grade 3 teacher, Jacqueline Samuels. “She is a go-getter. Whatever she desires, she goes after it, and she does it.”
Calete, Arianna’s grandmother, has also seen tremendous growth since Arianna’s joining Christel House Jamaica.
“She has the potential, and the teachers are there to back her,” she says. “The support provided by the school helps ensure students have what they need to succeed and nothing will stop her and hold her back.”
Whether she is solving math problems, reading to her siblings, or chasing her goals on the track, Arianna approaches every challenge with determination and enthusiasm.
She hopes to become a doctor one day, stating, “I want to help people.” No doubt, this smart, beautiful, and excited young student is just getting started.
