Bridges to Brilliance: Boosting Academic Outcomes

For the past three years, American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) has partnered with Christel House Jamaica to fund our Academic Booster Programme,  providing students with the additional support needed to close critical learning gaps and prepare for their Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examinations. The programme offers targeted academic instruction on Saturdays, along with transportation and nutritional support to ensure students can fully participate.

Now, PEP results are in, and we couldn’t be more proud. The cohort has achieved a more than 30 percent increase in the number of students performing at the proficiency level in Mathematics and Language Arts, as compared to their previous Grade 4 PEP assessments.

    Additionally:

    • 72.2% of Grade 6 students achieved Mastery in Literacy, surpassing the national target.
    • 68.5% of Grade 6 students achieved Mastery in Numeracy, coming within just 2 percentage points of the national target.

Reflecting on the results, Tina Brown, Vice Principal Academics and incoming Principal, shares:

“These results are a testament to sustained improvements in instructional quality, targeted intervention, and data-driven academic support. We’re celebrating how far we’ve come, while keeping our eye on our long-term goals to exceed national averages in every dimension.”

Congratulations to our students for their continued success, and to all of the teachers, parents and partners who provided active support. We are confident in the strong academic foundation established and look forward to expanded opportunities for these students as they begin their transition to high school.
