    Listen and Learn with GK

    GK Listening Stations

Imagine a classroom where a child can access interactive learning, building critical literacy skills while their teachers provide focused support to small groups. That’s the vision behind the listening stations donated by the GraceKennedy Foundation. These stations, set up in each of the three Christel House Jamaica Kindergarten classes, are transforming learning for our youngest students and help close the learning gaps many bring with them when they start school.

Equipped with five tablets, noise-cancelling headphones and literacy learning software, these stations are giving students meaningful, engaging activities that strengthen reading, listening, and comprehension skills.

Many of our Kindergarten students arrive with limited prior school experience and significant gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy. CHJ’s investment in the Lindamood-Bell Seeing Stars Reading programme has strengthened teacher-led instruction and outcomes since its introduction in 2022.

This work is now complemented by the listening stations, introduced in October, which support independent learning, prepare students for guided reading sessions, encourage teamwork, and provide positive reinforcement while other groups engage with teachers in focused instruction or other learning activities. Because stations are dedicated to specific classrooms, information can be saved, and teachers can track their progress over time. Apps like Duolingo are helping with vocabulary building, pre-reading skills and sight words.

“The listening stations have made a major difference in the classroom, especially for students who struggle with blending and their letter sounds,” says Ms. Chelsie Myers. She says they have been a great resource for students who have different learning styles and may act out as a result. Ms. Myers described a student who now looks forward to the literacy lesson, is more confident and doesn’t lash out as much.

Most importantly, the listening stations are helping staff maximise the critical early years when children develop the skills that shape their future success.
