When Tina Brown joined Christel House Jamaica (CHJ), she brought with her over 20 years of experience in literacy intervention and development. As the school's new Reading Specialist, she’s tasked with reforming and developing the school's overall literacy program, as well as coordinating assessments for the entire school. In a few short months, she’s made a significant impact.
According to Jason Scott, CHJ Principal, Brown has established a Literacy Block program for one hour each day, as part of the school’s daily calendar. “This program has been implemented across all grade levels and focuses on the development of language and literacy skills,” he says. “This has yielded significant success in improving language and literacy skills for students of all grade levels.” In addition to the Literacy Block program, Brown also provides individual and group interventions each week for students with reading challenges. But according to her principal, her work goes beyond helping students. “The teaching staff has also benefited,” Scott says. “She has facilitated multiple Professional Development sessions for staff, guided common planning sessions for the different grade level groups, and conducted one-on-one peer coaching sessions with teachers. She is a critical addition to the staff of Christel House Jamaica and continues to make her mark.”
